Cigna offers Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement plans, and prescription drug plans. Its Medicare Supplement plans are available in 48 states, but it doesn’t offer as many plans compared to other insurers. It offers a variety of Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO plans to fit a variety of needs. It also offers three prescription drug plans that cater to the different needs and budgets that patients may have. Vision and dental are included with several plans. One unique benefit that Cigna includes with several of its plans is the Cigna Healthy Today card, which is a preloaded debit card that can be used toward food, supplements, and even utility bills.
Cigna is a good choice for Medicare Advantage plans, but you will want to double check to make sure that the plans it offers are available in your state and county. If not, Aetna offers Medicare Advantage plans in all states except Alaska. While its Medicare Supplement plans are widely available, you may want to look elsewhere if you want more options. Both Humana and Mutual of Omaha would be good alternatives. Cigna’s preloaded debit card is a unique added benefit for those who could use the additional financial help. (See below for more information.)
Medicare is medical insurance sponsored by the federal government that is available to those who are 65 or older. Medicare provides Part A, which covers hospital expenses, and Part B, which covers doctor visits. However, it does not cover all expenses. (Part A and Part B are also known as Original Medicare.)
That’s where Medicare Supplement insurance and Medicare Advantage plans come into play. Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, and Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, are designed to supplement Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare patients do not need both Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage.
They are both purchased through insurance companies. Medicare Advantage plans typically have low premiums, require copays, and come with network restrictions. Supplement insurance policies typically come with higher premiums, have lower costs when receiving care, and do not come with network restrictions.
